There have been many ninja prodigies in Naruto. These prodigies are once in a generation kids who have the potential to become legendary shinobi. Today, let us look at the top 12 of such prodigies in Naruto.
12. Hanabi Hyuga
As a Hyūga, Hanabi possesses the Byakugan, a dōjutsu kekkei genkai. While a common trait for her clan, Hanabi’s is noted by her father to be very powerful, almost as great as her cousin Neji’s. Hanabi herself is also very confident about her Byakugan, claiming that its perception is as good as any fully grown Hyūga’s. Toneri Ōtsutsuki described her Byakugan as being “very pure” and specifically targeted her Byakugan in order to awaken the Tenseigan. When activated, it grants her an almost 360° field of vision (except for a small blind spot), x-ray vision, and the ability to see chakra accurate enough to target the chakra pathway system.
11. Neji Hyuga
Neji Hyūga (日向ネジ, Hyūga Neji) was a member of Konohagakure’s Hyūga clan. Though a prodigy even by the Hyūga’s standards, Neji was a member of the clan’s branch house; no matter how skilled he became, he would always be in service to the Hyūga’s main house, a fact that convinced him fate was predetermined. After experiencing Naruto Uzumaki’s refusal to be limited by such an ideology, Neji realised his fate was what he chose it to be, and as a member of Team Guy he sought the strength necessary to make the future he wanted for his family and friends.
10. Sasuke Uchiha
Sasuke Uchiha (うちはサスケ, Uchiha Sasuke) is one of the last surviving members of Konohagakure’s Uchiha clan. After his older brother, Itachi, slaughtered their clan, Sasuke made it his mission in life to avenge them by killing Itachi. He is added to Team 7 upon becoming a ninja and, through competition with his rival and best friend, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke starts developing his skills. Dissatisfied with his progress, he defects from Konoha so that he can acquire the strength needed to exact his revenge. His years of seeking vengeance and his actions that followed become increasingly demanding, irrational and isolates him from others, leading him to be branded as an international criminal. After learning the truth of his brother’s sacrifice and later proving instrumental in ending the Fourth Shinobi World War and being happily redeemed by Naruto, Sasuke decides to return to Konoha and dedicates his life to help protect the village and its inhabitants becoming referred to as the “Supporting Kage” (支う影, Sasaukage, Literally meaning: Supporting Shadow).
9. Hashirama Senju
Hashirama Senju (千手柱間, Senju Hashirama) was a member of the famed Senju clan. He himself was hailed as the “God of Shinobi” for his unmatched ninja prowess. Hashirama sought peace for the shinobi world, and to that end founded Konohagakure with his clan, his childhood friend and rival: Madara Uchiha and the Uchiha clan. He would later become the First Hokage (初代火影, Shodai Hokage, Literally meaning: First or Founding Fire Shadow) of Konohagakure. Although he was not able to achieve peace during his lifetime, his legacy and vision for the world would continue to shape the village and the entire shinobi world even after his death.
8. Madara Uchiha
Madara Uchiha (うちはマダラ, Uchiha Madara) was the legendary leader of the Uchiha clan. He founded Konohagakure alongside his rival, Hashirama Senju, with the intention of beginning an era of peace. When the two couldn’t agree on how to achieve that peace, they fought for control of the village, a conflict which ended in Madara’s death. Madara, however, rewrote his death and went into hiding to work on his own plans. Unable to complete it in his natural life, he entrusted his knowledge and plans to Obito Uchiha shortly before his actual death. Years later, Madara would be revived, only to see his plans foiled before his final death.
7. Hiruzen Sarutobi
Hiruzen was a natural prodigy as a ninja, hailed as a “God of Shinobi”. His talents earned him the position of Hokage at a young age, directly selected by the Second Hokage. He was once regarded as the strongest Hokage in Konoha’s history, the strongest shinobi of his clan, and the most powerful of Kage during his lifetime. While his battle prowess deteriorated in old age, he still retained enough skill to battle against Orochimaru, along with the reincarnated First and Second Hokage; ultimately sealing his fellow Hokage and handicapping Orochimaru’s ability to use ninjutsu. Orochimaru believed that had Hiruzen been ten years younger, he could’ve killed him.
6. Shisui Uchiha
Even by Uchiha standards, Shisui was noted to be one of the most talented members the famed clan ever had. Danzō even hailed him as the strongest Uchiha of his time. His abilities allowed him to rise to rank of jōnin at a young age and eventually a captain of his own squad. His prowess was so widely known that an entire squad of Kiri-nin quickly chose to flee upon learning of his presence rather than to confront him. A further testament to his prowess is the fact that Kabuto Yakushi wanted to reincarnate him for the upcoming war but was unable to find a sufficient DNA sample for it.
Like other students of the Third Hokage, Orochimaru is an exceptionally talented shinobi, recognised as a natural prodigy; Hashirama Senju, a God of Shinobi, praises Orochimaru’s skills. It wasn’t until the Second Shinobi World War that their skills became widely known, dubbed by Hanzō as the Sannin, the strongest of their generation. Orochimaru’s power was known and feared throughout the ninja world, such that Akatsuki, of which he was once a member, viewed him as a threat that needed to be eliminated. Shortly before the Konoha Crush, Hiruzen believed that no one in Konoha, himself included, could defeat Orochimaru. Although his invasion fails, it is indeed through Orochimaru’s actions that the Third Hokage dies among many others and Konoha’s military force is temporarily crippled. Although Sasuke defeats Orochimaru in Part II, he admits that his victory was attributed partially to the Sannin’s weakening body.
4. Itachi Uchiha
Even within the Uchiha clan, Itachi was a ninja of prodigious talent, consistently showing prowess well-beyond his years and rising rapidly through the ninja ranks. He was highly proficient in all three main ninja skill sets and gained praise from allies and foes alike; Orochimaru, one of the Sannin, openly admitted Itachi was stronger than he was. Obito claimed that despite being crippled by illness, Itachi was fully capable of killing Sasuke during their battle if he wanted to. A pacifist at heart, Itachi did not actually like fighting and would avoid it when he could. When he couldn’t, he would end the fight as quickly as possible, all the while holding himself back. Even when restrained in this way, a team of jōnin were still pushed to their limits against Itachi.
3. Minato Namikaze
Minato was one of the most powerful shinobi in history, such that Kakashi, Jiraiya and the Fourth Raikage considered his abilities to be unmatched by anyone else. During the Third Shinobi World War, flee-on-sight orders were given to enemy shinobi should they ever see him. During the Nine-Tails’ attack on Konoha, it was only through Minato’s actions that Tobi and the fox were defeated and the village was saved from complete destruction. When the Konoha Crush loomed years later, Minato was believed to be the only one who could have stopped the threat of Orochimaru, and thus his death was deeply regretted.
2. Kakashi Hatake
Kakashi is a natural prodigy, evidenced by his rapid rise through the ninja ranks. His feats and renown cause him to be recognised on sight by foreign ninja like Zabuza Momochi, Kidōmaru and the Fourth Raikage, deemed by Itachi Uchiha as an opponent Kisame Hoshigaki won’t beat easily, he could fight Kakuzu to a near standstill despite the elderly S-rank ninja’s abilities, and viewed by Pain as a major threat to Akatsuki’s plans. To his allies in Konoha, Kakashi is valued highly for his combat prowess and leadership skills, such that many foresaw his rise to Hokage status years before it happened. His prowess is such, that some believe he could take on an entire country. However, the Sage of Six Paths believed Kakashi’s greatest strength lied with him as a teacher, leader, and friend, all of which proved to be vital factors in Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s defeat.
1. Indra Otsutsuki
From a young age, Indra was recognised as a prodigy, even by his legendary father, having inherited much of the latter’s power, talent and strong genes. He had a great aptitude for any skill or study he applied himself to. Furthermore, he also inherited his father’s “eyes”: his powerful chakra, and spiritual energy. In the anime, virtually all of Hagoromo’s followers had little doubt Indra would eventually become his father’s successor.
